Italy: The truth for Giulio Regeni postponed sine die

0

False start at the trial of four agents of the secret services of Marshal Abdel Fattah Al Sissi, accused of having, in early 2016, tortured and killed Giulio Regeni, a young Italian student in sociology, who came to Egypt as part of his research on unions independent after the Arab Spring. Thursday, in the middle of the evening, after more than six hours of interruption of session, the court, meeting in the high security quarter of the prison of Rebibbia, in the suburbs of Rome, decreed the suspension sine die of the hearings and the referral of the case to the examining magistrate. In question, the legal obligation to officially inform the accused persons of the procedure against them.

During the preliminary hearing last May, the magistrate in charge of the case considered that the media coverage of the case which has poisoned relations between Egypt and Italy for five years should lead to consider as made the proper information. But since, in Cairo, the authorities have systematically refused to provide contact details for the four soldiers, no one can prove that they knowingly evade their obligation to appear.

The government of Mario Draghi is a civil party

New letters rogatory must now be sent to Egypt so that it agrees to cooperate. However, until then, the Sisi regime jealously protects the members of the National Security: according to the official version, Giulio Regeni would have died following a “kidnapping” carried out by a band specializing in the extortion of foreigners. This thesis has convinced no one in Rome and in the rest of Italy where, for five years, the mobilization in favor of the “truth for Giulio Regeni” has never weakened.

A new sign of expectations on the other side of the Alps: on the eve of the expected opening of the trial, the government of Mario Draghi filed a civil action. According to Italian investigators, General Tareq Saber, Colonels Aser Kamal and Hicham Helmi and Commander Magdi Cherif have “Tortured the student for days by inflicting burns, kicks, punches and using bladed weapons and sticks”, before finishing him off and leaving his body, horribly mutilated, on the side of a road in the vicinity of Cairo.

For those close to Giulio Regeni, who also published articles under pseudonym in various titles – including the Communist daily He Manifesto -, the suspension of the trial at the Assises in Rome is basically just another regrettable incident. “It’s a halt, admits Me Alessandra Ballerini, the family lawyer, but we absolutely do not give up on prosecuting those who tortured and killed Giulio, so that they do not remain with impunity. ” For Claudio Francavilla, from the NGO Human Rights Watch, “The decision leaves a bitter taste, but it must be respected. It shows what a fair trial is, which could never happen in Egypt today. “
