Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s odyssey in Iran never ends. Her appeal against her second imprisonment is rejected. The criticism, especially in her home country Great Britain, is immense. Her husband reports of dire imprisonment conditions and suicidal thoughts on his wife.

The British-Iranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has been detained in Iran since 2016, is threatened with another prison term. She failed with her appeal against a second judgment, said supporters of the 43-year-olds via Twitter. His wife was “traumatized by the thought of going back to prison,” her husband Richard Ratcliffe told the BBC.

In April, a court in Tehran found Zaghari-Ratcliffe guilty of propaganda allegations and sentenced him to one year in prison as well as a one-year ban on leaving the country. Her lawyer had appealed against it. A judge has now rejected this without a hearing, it said on Twitter. When she will be arrested again is unclear.

The second trial of Zaghari-Ratcliffe began in mid-March, just a week after the end of her five-year sentence. According to her lawyer, she was charged with participating in a rally in front of the Iranian embassy in London in 2009.

The arrest took place on vacation

The case has strained diplomatic relations between Iran and Britain for years. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested in 2016 while on vacation in Iran. The Iranian authorities accused her of taking part in anti-government protests seven years earlier. A court sentenced her to five years in prison for conspiracy to overthrow. Zaghari-Ratcliffe had always denied the allegations. At that time she was working as a project manager for the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The mother of a now seven-year-old daughter served her sentence in prison first. When the corona pandemic broke out in spring 2020, she was transferred to house arrest with her parents in Tehran.

During her time in Tehran’s Evin Prison, Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held in solitary confinement in a windowless cell for a long time and went on a hunger strike at times. According to her husband, she suffered from the hygienic conditions and also had suicidal thoughts. The organization Redress evaluates her treatment in the detention center as torture. The Iranian authorities have always denied any mistreatment.
