The French specialist in ultra-resistant smartphones and tablets lifts the veil on its latest creation. The Crosscall Action-X5 has a reinforced design and focuses on video with an integrated action-cam to accompany backpackers and athletes.
Rugged phones and tablets occupy a special place in the smartphone world, prioritizing robustness and durability over other aspects generally put forward by manufacturers. Among the few French brands in the mobile landscape, Crosscall has made it its specialty and the Aix-based company is back with the Action-X5. A little more than three years after its Trekker-X4 and the desire to expand its catalog in 2020 with four new products for companies, Crosscall presents a new model for athletes and backpackers.
The Action-X5 improves certain aspects, starting with the integration of an action-cam directly into the shell of the device. The firm promises a “Optimized version with significantly higher photo quality” to that of the Trekker-X4, launched in 2018. Crosscall explains to us that it was able to count on feedback from users and its team of engineers to improve its smartphone. The Action-X5 is equipped with a 48 Mpx (80 °) main camera and a 13 Mpx (120 °) ultra-wide-angle sensor at the rear, but also at the front. As on other more classic smartphones, the presence of this ultra wide-angle at the front is justified by the desire to offer a selfie mode “To have everyone in the picture”.

This configuration is accompanied by an X-Cam application developed by Crosscall. It offers some essential features such as Slowmotion, Timelapse or even a Dashcam mode, as well as the Hyperstab function which stabilizes the video while keeping the horizon straight. The Crosscall Action-X5 can shoot in Full HD 1080p, without any precision on the part of the brand regarding the frame rate.
The rest of the setup includes a 5.45-inch IPS LCD display with HD + definition in 18: 9 aspect ratio. A brightness of 500 cd / m2 is promised while a protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is present. This is undoubtedly the most fragile element of this smartphone for adventurers, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 flanked by 4 GB of RAM. A rather light configuration which does not allow this terminal to appear among the most efficient models. The storage part includes 64 GB internally, with the possibility of using a microSD card up to 512 GB. Autonomy is provided by a 3850 mAh battery, a capacity that may not seem generous. However, it should be noted that the smartphone has a light configuration and a screen of reasonable size. Crosscall evokes “Up to 25 hours in communication or 11 hours in GPS use […] and 13 days on standby ”.

Robust design and walkie-talkie function
A smartphone for backpackers is rarely chosen for its performance, but rather for its robustness. Croscall evokes a “Design cut for adventure” with an aggressive look and an ability to remain functional in extreme conditions (from -25 ° C to + 60 ° C). The smartphone is also IP68 certified, making it waterproof against liquids and dust. As is often the case with this type of device, we are also entitled to a US MIL-STD-810H certification which ensures better resistance to falls. Finally, we note that this smartphone delivered with Android 11 has a 3-year warranty and has a repairability index of 8.8 out of 10.
On the edge of the phone, there are two programmable buttons. They can be configured to use the smartphone as a walkie-talkie in order to “Communicate with several people simultaneously and instantaneously without distance limits”. The dedicated application, X-Talk, is installed natively on the device.
