Google unveils list of smartphones eligible for Android 12L beta

Google has released the list of Pixel smartphones eligible for the Android 12L beta program. This new version will be officially available in the first quarter of 2022, after the deployment of three beta versions. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will also be compatible.

Google surprised at the beginning of November by presenting a variant of Android 12. Presented at the Android Dev Summit 2021, Android 12L is a version of the OS optimized for the large screens of tablets, folding smartphones and even devices under Chrome OS. The Mountain View firm confided that this “Large” version of Android 12 would see the light of day early next year, after a beta phase. However, she did not specify which smartphones could claim the beta program.

The Android Police site spotted that Google had rectified the situation by indicating, on its site, the list of compatible devices. Despite the emphasis on folding devices and tablets, Pixel smartphones will be the only ones that can install the Android 12 L beta. Here is the list of compatible models:

Unsurprisingly, we find the latest models in the range while the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are conspicuous by their absence. These models launched in 2018 are officially coming to the end of their life and will no longer receive updates. Released more recently, the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are however part of this list while the Pixel 4 XL is – strangely – not concerned. The Android Police site also noted this absence and recalls that this smartphone shares characteristics almost identical to those of the Pixel 4. This is probably an error on the part of the Californian giant, which had already forgotten the Pixel 3a and 3a XL in his list.

Even if Android 12L is designed for large screens of tablets or folding devices, Google has therefore decided to offer this version on the Pixels. This choice may appear surprising insofar as the manufacturer had entrusted: ” [Android] 12L is also aimed at phones, but since most of the new features won’t be visible on smaller screens, our focus for now is on tablets, folding devices and on ChromeOS ”.

Pixels will have priority, but for a short time

The exclusivity will be short-lived since Google has already confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will also be compatible. “For folding devices, you will see a lot of these functions [d’Android 12L]including Activities [afficher en même temps plusieurs éléments] which will soon be available on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 », explained the firm during its event, reports the 9to5Google site. This smartphone joined by the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro tablet.

However, it will be necessary to wait at least until February before discovering the final version of Android 12L. Google plans to launch a first beta in December, a second in January and a third in February. The final grind will then be offered to the “First quarter 2022”, or before the end of March.

Note that other Samsung devices should benefit from Android 12L in the coming months. The SamMobile site has already compiled an unofficial list of Galaxy devices likely to receive the update. It includes the entire Galaxy Fold range including the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, as well as many Galaxy Tabs (S7 +, S7, S7 FE, S6 5G, S6, S6 Lite, A 8.4, A7, A7 Lite and Active 3). We are now awaiting confirmation from Google or the South Korean manufacturer.
