Just six months after the presentation of the ROG Phone 5, Asus is back with an “s” series. This refreshed version follows on from the original range and benefits from an upgrade. The smartphone dedicated to gamers now embeds the Snapdragon 888+, the latest chip from Qualcomm. The Xiaomi MIX 4 and Honor’s Magic3 were so far the only two models to integrate this high-end SoC. A logical evolution that will allow the ROG Phone 5s and ROG Phone 5s Pro to be a little more efficient than their predecessors. This “+” variant of the Snapdragon 888 indeed benefits from a “Prime” core clocked at 2.995 GHz, against 2.84 GHz for the basic version. The new chip also promises boosted artificial intelligence.

Two smartphones stamped “s” are therefore presented and take most of the characteristics of the ROG Phone 5. Asus continues to bet on a large 6.78-inch Samsung E4 AMOLED screen, displaying a Full HD + definition (2,248 × 1,080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. There are also 8 or 16 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage for the ROG Phone 5s. The Pro variant climbs to 18 GB of RAM (LPDDR5) and 512 GB of storage (UFS 3.1), thus taking the elements of the “Ultimate” version. This new Pro model also retains the ROG Vision display on the back.

The “s” series will gradually replace the ROG Phone 5

In terms of the differences, the touch sampling rate is increased to 360 Hz instead of 300 Hz on the ROG Phone 5. With the new chipset Qualcomm, this is the only real change brought by this refreshed range, which will eventually replace the ROG Phone 5. Asus indeed entrusts that the ROG Phone 5s will take their place when stocks are exhausted.

The Taiwanese brand, however, has not confirmed the price of its new smartphones. However, we can expect it to be close to that of the previous generation. As a reminder, the ROG Phone 5 and ROG Phone 5 Pro were respectively billed from € 799 and € 1199. Regarding the Ultimate variant, it was displayed at € 1,299.
