The next iPhone SE could be the brand’s last smartphone to feature an LCD screen. This third iteration would benefit from a notable evolution with a change of processor and 5G compatibility.
End clap for LCD screens on Apple smartphones. The brand now favors OLED technology on its smartphones and has completely abandoned LCD technology for its iPhone 13. The trend is also for renewal on the side of Cupertino which has just announced its new MacBook with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips and seeks to upgrade its screens. Its next 27-inch iMac could benefit from a mini-LED panel. However, one range is resisting, it is the iPhone SE. The third iteration of the affordable smartphone from Apple would be the last to offer an LCD panel, according to the Chinese site mydrivers.com.
Why does Apple favor OLED?
OLED is a much newer screen technology than LCD and brings many benefits. The first is a superior visual quality thanks to an infinite contrast allowing to display very intense and deep blacks. This has a direct influence on the image with better color rendering and a nice depth of field. Unlike the LCD, whose blacks, created by a mixture of color pixels, are somewhat gray. The other advantage, which is decisive for Apple smartphones, is the battery saving achieved by the integration of an OLED screen, which consumes much less energy than aging LCD technology.

iPhone SE 3: heading for 5G
Regarding the iPhone SE 3, apart from the screen, the information relayed by the Chinese site mentions a technical sheet identical to the current version SE 2 with a few details. The next version of the smartphone could change the processor in favor of an A15 version, for a gain in power, autonomy and especially support for the 5G network. For the rest, the characteristics do not change and the 3rd generation should retain the previous configuration which made its success.
This more accessible SE range is very popular in the market and tries to compete with Android models. With each new release, Apple is looking to make some necessary improvements to stay in the competition. Remember that the iPhone SE, including the 1st generation, are all compatible with the new iOS15 system, released just a month ago. It will be the same for the iPhone SE 3.
Still according to the same source, the iPhone SE 3 would appear at its release at a price of 3299 yuan, or about 440 euros. A consistent price that should align with that of the current iPhone SE 2 currently displayed at 489 euros. A price that could fit this future SE 3 into the category of affordable 5G compatible smartphones.
