After months of waiting, Google has finally lifted the veil on its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. These two promising phones mark a turning point in the smartphone world for the American giant.
Google introduced its new line of phones and, to say the least, it was eagerly awaited. The Mountain View firm discussed its future smartphones in the summer and multiplied the clues until its conference on October 19. This event allowed Google to formalize the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro and to lift the veil on the last details concerning them. Along with the iPhone 13s, they are among the most anticipated smartphones at the end of 2021 and this is largely explained by Google’s new approach.

The announcement during the summer of a Pixel 5a that will not be released in France has not really excited the sector. Attractive and far from technically uninteresting, this device was in line with the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 passed by Labo Fnac. All eyes were indeed already on the Pixel 6 and their house chip. Google has had a turbulent history in the world of hardware (hardware) and more particularly in that of the smartphone. The Mountain View company has for some time been content to show the way with the Nexus family, without overshadowing its Android partners. This argument was still present when the Pixel line was born, but recent history has shown that the American firm has an important role to play. Regularly cited among the photo references, the latest Pixels have even been entitled to little brothers carrying a letter “a” to differentiate themselves.
With the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Google is returning to the very high end and is taking a new step by offering the first “real” Google Phones. The manufacturer is no longer satisfied with the equipment of its partners and has decided to invest like Apple or Samsung by offering its first chipset House. The Google Tensor is the heart of the Pixel 6 and the firm places great emphasis on the integration of AI, this SoC being intended to run all of Google’s artificial intelligence functions without draining the battery.
Security is also one of the priorities of this range, which will be entitled to five years of security updates. Both devices can also count on the presence of a Titan M2 coprocessor dedicated to data security and confidentiality.

Base model of this vintage, the Pixel 6 benefits from the novelties mentioned above. This smartphone can rely on a 6.4-inch OLED screen displaying Full HD + (1080 × 2400 pixels, 411 ppi) in 20: 9 format. This Smooth Display offers a refresh rate of up to 90Hz and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. HDR compatible, it has a High Brightness mode and an Always On mode with the functions In short and Listening. The fingerprint reader is placed under this slab.

The design of the Pixel 6 had already been mentioned by Google, which takes advantage of its conference to confirm the presence of an imposing bar at the back. Made of recycled aluminum, it highlights the cameras. The exterior was created in collaboration with the team software (software). There are themes dedicated to each color and the colors of the interface and the system adapt to the chosen wallpaper. This is one of the great novelties of Android 12 and Google compares it to a “Personal stylist for the phone”.
Inside, the Google Tensor SoC and the Titan M2 coprocessor are associated with 8 GB of RAM (LPDDR5) and 128 or 256 GB of storage in UFS 3.1. Highly anticipated on the photo part, Google offers a double module consisting of a main sensor of 50 Mpx (Quad Bayer wide-angle with Octa PD technology) measuring 1 / 1.31 inch. The lens of this wide-angle sensor opens at f / 1.85 and it is accompanied by a 12 Mpx ultra-wide-angle module opening at f / 2.2. Optical image stabilization (OIS) is present, and an 8 MP (f / 2.0) sensor takes place at the front.
The autonomy is ensured by a battery of 4614 mAh compatible with the fast charge. The manufacturer mentions the possibility of recovering up to 50% of the charge “In about 30 minutes” with the 30W USB-C charger compatible with PD 3.0 PPS. As expected, this AC adapter is sold separately. The Pixel 6 has Qi certification and is compatible with fast and reverse wireless charging.
Pixel 6 Pro: the truly high-end smartphone from Google

Like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the Pixel 6 Pro is a premium smartphone. Larger than the Pixel 6 (163.9 × 75.9 × 8.9 mm and 210 g, against 158.6 × 74.8 × 8.9 mm for 207 g), it has a 6 LTPO OLED screen, 7 inches. This 19.5: 9 screen displays a QHD + definition (1440 × 3120 pixels, 512 dpi) and opts for a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.
The Google Tensor is here flanked by 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage in UFS 3.1. In addition to its large screen, this Pro variant stands out by integrating a triple module on the back. In addition to the 50 Mpx (f / 1.85) main sensor and the 12 Mpx (f / 2.2) ultra-wide-angle lens, Google offers a 48 Mpx (f / 3.5) telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. At the front, an 11.1 Mpx (f / 2.2) camera is present and offers to shoot in 4K. This muscular configuration is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery, still compatible with fast charging. Google makes the same promise as the Pixel 6 – up to 50% charge in about 30 minutes – and the AC adapter is once again optional.

On the software side, the Pixel 6 promises improvements in speech recognition and real-time translation. On the photo side, the brand introduces Real Tone to improve facial detection and white balance while a Motion Mode will use an algorithm to isolate the subject and add a blur effect around it. Finally, a magic eraser promises to automatically detect what can be removed from a photo.
